Deeplocal is looking for an experienced Freelance Fabricator to work in our Pittsburgh, PA studio.

Fabricators are responsible for performing high quality work on a variety of exhibit and interactive experience fabrication tasks including assembly, finishing, painting, digital fabrication and general assembly of wood or engineered parts (metal and other solid surface). They have oversight from more senior team members, working to deepen and expand their skill sets and accountabilities. 

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced fabrication shop, but who understands that attention to detail is of utmost importance, even when multiple projects are being produced simultaneously. Candidates will have an opportunity to work on original, often highly visible, projects alongside a talented team of designers, engineers, and technologists.

Responsibilities

  • Fabrication: Detailed, high quality fabrication of custom components in metal, wood, and plastics.
  • Finishing: Painting and bodywork (ex Bondo) of exhibits and sub components
  • Problem Solving: Deeplocal makes first of its kind interactive exhibits. Often there are unknowns in the design and fabrication of components that require problem solving and communication with different disciplines from engineering and creative.
  • Maintaining Equipment and Supplies: Inspects the work area and machines that were used during the day prior to leaving at the end of each shift. Orders new parts and supplies as necessary, and with approval from management.
  • Collaborating: Must work with a team to ensure that project requirements are met and that projects are completed on time and within budget.

Desired Skills

  • High degree of technical ability in commercial, fine art, or interactive exhibit fabrication
  • Experience with millwork, cabinetry, body work, airbrush, and HVLP spray gun preferred
  • Enjoys working as part of a team, with strong communication and follow-up skills
  • A strong attention to detail, and the ability to think quickly and solve problems
  • Creative thinker and problem-solver who is comfortable with ambiguity
  • Excited by new challenges and never-been-done-before work
  • Demonstrated ability to follow quality and safety standards
  • Embrace and help lead production towards more digital manufacturing processes
  • Understanding of cut lists and blueprint specifications
  • Ability to read measuring tools and other shop tools
  • Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Computer skills required, Google Suite experience is preferred

Location

This is a Studio/Shop-Based position.

Fabricators will be required to travel for the installation and on-site finishing of interactive exhibits. They will also occasionally work evenings and weekends when required to meet project timelines.
