Deeplocal is hiring a Backend & Devops Software Engineer to architect, build, and maintain a robust and scalable backend infrastructure for Gumband, which is Deeplocal’s proprietary software and hardware platform that is currently being used internally. This role presents a unique opportunity to externalize and launch Gumband — a new SaaS product — with the benefit of tapping into Deeplocal’s expertise as an interactive experience developer for some of the world’s top brands.
The Backend & Devops Software Engineer is accountable for architecting and extending Gumband’s backend microservices, maintaining and upgrading build and deploy pipelines for CI/CD, managing cloud-based and on-prem infrastructure, orchestrating the software release lifecycle, and ensuring a reliable, fault-tolerant system that provides critical uptime to meet projects’ time-sensitive needs.
This position is open to remote candidates outside of Pittsburgh, PA, but candidates must be willing to travel to Pittsburgh and/or client locations as required for engineering and support efforts. Travel time is expected to be approximately 10%.
Gumband is a first-of-its-kind operating system for interactive environments, including customer experience centers, retail spaces, and museums. This cloud-based software tool with optional hardware helps developers and operators manage all parts of their interactive environment on one platform. Gumband includes a web application with user-friendly dashboard as well as a REST API, SDKs, microcontroller-based hardware, firmware libraries, and the supporting documentation to power exhibits. As both a development platform for exhibit builders and a management tool for operators, Gumband is designed to be customized for each unique environment.
Gumband provides a framework for bespoke exhibits, an example being a lottery-style “shoe drop” machine developed by Deeplocal that had sneakerheads lined up around a high-profile NY footwear store. The platform allowed retail associates to monitor the custom machine’s ink and paper levels, control the lighting effects and colors, update on-screen copy and assets, schedule operational modes, and report usage analytics. Without Gumband, the development lift and maintenance effort would have been significantly greater. And the “shoe drop” machine is only one example; there’s an ever-increasing variety of exhibits and environments being built on top of Gumband around the world.
