Deeplocal is seeking a Program Director to launch and lead GIZMOLOGY, our new creative technology apprenticeship program targeted to recent high school grads and underemployed adults in Pittsburgh’s Black community.
This position requires program development experience, ideally in vocational, educational, and/or STEAM disciplines. Building GIZMOLOGY from the ground up, you’ll have the unique opportunity to directly impact lives by addressing occupational segregation, fostering creative tech talent, and advancing racial equity for Black makers in Pittsburgh’s technology sector.
This role will report to Deeplocal’s COO and collaborate with team members across disciplines, including engineering, creative technology, production, operations, and marketing, as well as with local nonprofit, academic, and workforce development organizations. In addition, the role can be shaped in whatever way best supports this new initiative within Deeplocal.
Responsibilities:
- Program Development – Develop a framework for how Deeplocal is going to operate GIZMOLOGY within the Pittsburgh ecosystem, focusing on program format, staffing needs, operations, partnerships, and goals. Validate and expand on plans that are already in place.
- Program Management – Manage the program’s daily operations and staff, serving as the lead contact for apprentices, staff, and partners.
- Application Process – Develop and implement an accessible and equitable application process for prospective apprentices, including application guidelines and format, selection criteria, and all associated communications/messaging.
- Curriculum Development – Oversee development and documentation of the GIZMOLOGY curriculum, engaging internal team members for discipline-specific expertise as well as freelance support (technical writer, education lead, etc.).
- Recruitment & Promotion – Work in conjunction with Marketing to create promotional plans and materials to recruit prospective apprentices and community partners.
- Partnership Outreach & Relations – Develop a partnership/outsourcing strategy and cultivate partnerships as necessary for recruitment and promotional efforts, workforce development services, and funding. (Partners will span the tech sector, nonprofits, foundations, schools and academic institutions, and local/state government.)
- Budget & Financial Tracking – Develop the program budget; track and report program financials to Finance, Operations, and WPP (Deeplocal’s parent company).
- Program Logistics – Dive into the details and be proactive to ensure that GIZMOLOGY is a successful program.
Desired Skills
- 3+ years of leadership experience at a for-profit or nonprofit organization.
- 5+ years of experience in program development, ideally in vocational, educational, and/or STEAM disciplines.
- 5+ years of experience in community development, ideally working with historically marginalized populations and under-resourced communities.
- Comfort with developing strategies and implementing them; eventually, this role will be supported by additional hires, but you’ll be wearing all of the hats in the early stages.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with people who represent diverse age groups, skill sets, life experiences, and backgrounds.
- Highly organized with attention to detail.
- Creative thinker, collaborator, and problem solver; flexible and adaptable.
- Excited by new challenges and “startup” initiatives.
- Familiarity with Pittsburgh’s foundation and nonprofit ecosystem.
- Passion for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
